1- Sweatshop Workers Overworked and Underpaid

SWEATSHOP WORKERS, who work for well known big brand businesses for example GAP, made a measly $40 on average for a 56 hour week in 2002, while GAP made a humongous $13.8 billion profit!!!
These workers are often forced to work 12 hours a day (if not more), 7 days a week which can include off the clock time with no pay. Some workers get paid from as little as 10 cents an hour!!
Their human rights are neglected as their low wages cant meet even the basic costs of living. There is child labour, sexual and physical abuse and poor and unsanitary working conditions. They are not allowed to join a union and will loose their job if they do so.
Women, in particular, are violated as the abuse mainly happens to them. They are beaten, spat on and not allowed to take brakes and fined if they do. They are sexually assaulted and abused and some supervisors justify their behaviour by making empty promises to the woman that this will allow her to get a better position. If a woman is pregnant, she must abort her baby in order to keep her job. This doesnt give her much choice.
One example was in August 1995. It was found that 72 Thai immigrants worked under slave-like conditions. A raid was conducted on this sweatshop in El Monte, California. The immigrants worked for 69 cents an hour, locked in an apartment complex surrounded by razor wire. Workers were threatened with rape and murder if they stopped working.
This might look like a hard and difficult situation to change, however we can make a difference. We have the power. Companies depend on us and our money. They depend on us to buy their products for their company to survive. So please, sign this petition if you would like to put an end to sweatshop workers. Imagine if you were in their shoes.
Thank you
