We, the undersigned campus community members, demand increased representation of Asian/Pacific Islander Americans (A/PIA) in the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs (MESA) at the University of Michigan. As of this date, no A/PIA individuals serve on MESA's student services team or as professional staff. Lack of A/PIA representation is problematic for it silences one of the largest communities of color on campus, and is counter-productive to the mission of MESA and the University's commitment to diversity. Therefore, we demand that MESA initiate an application process for qualified A/PIA individuals to be hired and serve in the MESA office for the remainder of the 2006-2007 school year. Aside from the hiring process, we demand that the MESA director maintain an ongoing proactive interest in developing bonds with the A/PIA community.
