AB2641: Protection for Native American Burials

As citizens of numerous communities, including California Indians and Native Americans, we urge you to support AB2641. This bill will provide additional protection for Native American burials which at this time, have little or no protection.
With the increased development, the remains of Indigenous ancestors have been treated in a less than dignified manner. The law as it stands, considers California Indian burials to be archeological resources and subject to treatment that is less than dignified and violates basic human rights. In the recent case of Playa Vista Development in Marina Del Rey, over 450 burials were removed to make way for upscale housing. The Tongva community of Los Angeles, still grieves the loss of not being able to protect what they hold to be most sacred. It is a travesty, when the laws of society interfere with one fulfilling their cultural, social and religious obligation to protect the burials of their relatives.
The history of the State of California is filled with acts of aggression and violence that resulted in a significant loss of life and culture to the original inhabitants of this land. The descendents of those who survived this travesty are now burdened with the responsibility of protecting what little remains. Again, the law as it stands treats California Indian burials as less than human.
We ask for your support to further the protection of Native American burials in the State of California, and to ensure that all citizens of the State of California will be treated with respect, dignity and justly.
