Section 28 is a part of the British legal system that forbids schools in the United Kingdom to 'promote' anything to do with homosexuality. By promote this means teachers cannot discuss or inform young people in any way, shape or form about the subject. The Conservative Party support Section 28 - Anne Widdecome said in a recent interview: "These people can behave how they wish in their own homes, but our children should not be exposed to it.". This made me extremely angry - how is the next generation supposed to grow up in a tolerant society if the current one cannot be educated in other ways of life? How are gay young people supposed to grow up feeling proud of their identity and feelings if none of their peers are informed that homosexuality is not abnormal or a taboo subject? Stating that teachers should not 'promote' homosexuality in schools is as good as saying that they musn't discuss black culture because it might encourage white children to 'become black'. Exactly - its stupid and impossible and the whole idea of Section 28 is bigotted and outdated. I believe Section 28 should be abolished as soon as possible in order for Britain to call itself a truly tolerant society.
