Subject: Appeal to Save Nubian Ancient Heritage

Over ten years ago we sent memoranda to the UN, as well as numerous concerned groups and individuals, to appeal for solidarity and active support of our struggle to resist the building of new dams and seek help to develop the area and to facilitate our quest to remain on our land we sent memos one of which stated:
Considering the overall policies implemented in the area, including the plan to build Kajbar Dam in the face of numerous technical, economic, environmental and social objections, make the adverse attitude towards this historic region quite obvious. Objectively, there are no plausible explanations or reasonable justification for policies that destroy a fragile economy, scatter the only remaining Nubians away from their ancestral lands and, as a result, obliterate their distinct language, rich antiquities, ancient culture and way of life forever.

Present day Nubians are the proud carriers of the language, heritage and all
the legacy of an ancient civilization which is now being systematically and deliberately undermined, or even annihilated, by the ruling regime in the Sudan. Our struggle against all this continues to date.
We are appealing to you again hoping that all possible means be used to help us:
firstly, to stop the building of all dams in the Northern State as we have not yet recovered from the disaster of Aswan Dam which submerged all but a fraction of our antiquities despite the international efforts valiantly led by Unesco to save Nubian antiquities,
secondly, to assist us to become the indefatigable guardians of our antiquities by enabling us to
a)To declare our area as an Ancient Heritage protected area under Unesco.
b)Organizes training sessions to spread deep awareness among young women and men,
d) Advocate the implementation of lucrative, varied and untapped investment possibilities in tourism, and
e) To spread the knowledge and skills among the new generations of elders and contemporary scientific methods with their proven high agricultural yields combined with sustainable environmentally clean agro-industries without damaging our historical heritage sites.
The NSDC is planning to expand the campaign to save Nubian antiquities as an important objective closely linked to its aims and objectives since its inception. We have contacted other organisations and individuals who whole heartedly agreed to participate in the campaign which will enhance its efficacy locally and internationally (see enclosed signatures).
