APS 2009-2010 Budget

We understand the need for budget cuts in this economic climate but feel that these particular cuts disproportionately burden larger elementary schools and will be detrimental to our children at a vital point in their development and education.
Two elementary schools (Drew and Tuckahoe) will have existing staff positions that directly affect children and their ability to fulfill their learning potential --that is, staff who are not custodial or library-- reduced. These include: making the Assistant Principal, Principal's Assistant and the Gifted Resources Teacher half-time positions and eliminating the part-time Reading Specialist and Library Assistant. In addition, six elementary schools with increasing enrollment (Barrett, Carlin Springs, Claremont, Long Branch, Nottingham, and Oakridge) will not receive the additional half-time resources for these five positions as has been done in the past to provide equitable resources to larger elementary schools.
We are concerned about the impact on students and teachers that will result from trying to manage and educate students in large and overcrowded schools when key staff are only in the schools for half of the week.
We urge the School Board to find a way to share the pain of budget cuts more equitably across all elementary, middle and high schools.
This petition will be shared with Arlington County School Board Members in advance of the vote on the Superintendant Smiths proposed budget for the 2009-2010 school year.
Sincerely,
