AstLinux is an embedded Linux distribution for running Asterisk. It currently uses uClibc, an alternative, lightweight C library for Linux.
G729 is a patent-encumbered voice codec. The only legal implementation for Asterisk is available in a binary module that is provided by Digium. Digium is the only entity that has access to the source code for this module.
Users of AstLinux and other uClibc based systems are currently unable to transcode with g729 because this module is not available in a format that is compatible with their systems.
Digium is willing to compile codec_g729 against uClibc given enough interest. That is what this partition is for.
