On the 11th September 1991, Republic of Macedonia democratically declared independence from the break up of Yugoslavia. Since independence Macedonia continues to be challenged by Greece. Greece denies Macedonians as a distinct ethnic group and nation. Greece continues to discriminate and intimidate Ethnic Macedonians within her borders. The interim reference of FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) is out dated and derogatory to Macedonian Australians.
We urge the Rudd Government to follow 123 nations in recognising Republic of Macedonia with her constitutional name. Mr Rudd recently supported the human rights movement in Tibet and stood up too PR China, we want Mr Rudd to apply the same stance with Greece and Australian Greeks.
On the 24th of May 2008, 30,000 Macedonian Australians gathered at Victorian Parliament to voice their stance on denial of Human Rights for Macedonians and for Australia to recognise Macedonia with her constitutional name.
The following countries have recognised Republic of Macedonia: United States, Russia, China, Canada, United Kingdom, Turkey etc
