According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, more than 35,000 Canadian lives are lost each year due to cardiac arrest, and they are urging the installation of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in public areas, such as airports, shopping centres and sporting facilities. The Foundation claims that defibrillation improves survivability by up to 30\%, or the equivalent of more than 10,000 lives each year.
This year, there has been one death in a Richmond ice arena that could have been prevented had this equipment been available.
Therefore, we the undersigned urge Richmond (BC) City Council to support the installation of AEDs in the Citys ice arenas, and to further investigate installing, or requiring to have installed, AEDs in additional public buildings and places.
