Dear Sirs,

We, The Undersigned, are appalled that General Motors made the announcement on December 20, 2001 that GM is requesting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for approval to mandate the installation of Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) as standard equipment on all motor vehicles sold in the United States of America. As American Motorists, we are against Daytime Running Lights for numerous reasons. Despite the so-called claims and studies conducted by GM in regard to the reduction of Head-On collisions by DRLs, there is no real proof that DRLs prevent accidents. In fact, DRLs cause more hazards, such as distacting glare, especially on bright sunny days, that may cause an impairment to the vision of drivers, passengers, and pedestrians, and not being able to differentiate emergency vehicles, funeral processions, and motorcycles. Furthermore, a Federal mandate of having new cars and trucks equipped with DRLs as standard equipment also takes away the rights of a motorist on how he/she want their car equipped.

Mandating DRLs on all new cars and trucks is moving automotive safety 180 in the wrong direction. Daytime Running Lights waste fuel, irritate and annoy motorists and passengers, and may cause more accidents than they are ever given credit for. The Federal Government should be not mandating Daytime Running Lights, it should be banning them.

Thank You,

The Undersigned.
