Dear Premiere,

We are outraged by the case of two elderly petitioners, Ms. Wu Dianyuan (79) and Ms. Wang Xiuying (77), were sentenced to one year term of re-education through labor for applying permit to protest during Beijing Olympics. Together with none of the 77 applications of protest was approved, and activists were arrested after applying for permit, apparently, the promise to allow protest in designated area is just a ploy to punish petitioners who are exercising their rights.

Ms. Wu Dianyuan and Ms. Wang Xiuying used to be neighbors, both of them were victims of forced eviction in 2001. They have both been actively demanded for compensation from government since then. Between 5 August and 18 August, they applied permit for protest in designated "protest zones for five times. Beijing police then rejected their application and sentenced them to an extrajudicial term of "re-education through labor". Wu and Wangs case is not unique. Ji Sizun, Ge Yifei, Zhang Wei, Tang Xuecheng and a representative of parents of Sichuan earthquack who applied for permits for demonstration were also dentained or harrassed by the authorities.

Deeply disturbed by the injustice towards Chinese citizens who exercise their rights according to law, we demand the Chinese government to:
- release all petitioners who are detained;
- stop harassing human rights defenders;
- apologize to victims to arbitrary detention and bring the officials who abuse the rights protesters to justice in order to rectified the violations of rights;
- realize the Olympic pledge to improve human rights in China.

No matter how many gold medals Chinese athletes can win, these cannot cover the uncivilized acts of the Chinese government. If the Chinese government aspirates to build up reputation as a superpower, it should gain the recognition from others by good governance and legitimacy from people but not by make up and lies.

Yours sincerely,
