It has been speculated that Greenwich Leisure LTD are considering permanently closing the climbing wall at Brixton Leisure Centre.
The climbing wall has a very strong regular following with residents, young and old, from Brixton and afar, who attend what is known as the Brixton Climbers club on Monday and Wednesday evenings where Pascal provides instruction from beginner up to intermediate and advanced levels. Members also use the wall at other times of the week for climbing with their own equipment. There are no other climbing walls in Lambeth borough, and no other climbing walls in London that provide as good value for money as Brixton Recreation Centre. This is an extremely positive sports facility that provides accessible climbing and social opportunities for local residents.
The loss of this facility would have a significant impact on the local climbing community, and take away the opportunity for many residents interested in taking up this increasingly popular sport. Furthermore, the wall is a low maintenance facility, and raises revenue for the centre by the customers who use this otherwise dead space several times a week.
We the undersigned are local residents and regular customers of the climbing wall at Brixton Leisure Centre, we strongly urge Greenwich Leisure LTD to retain this facility
