TO THE HOUSE OF COMMONS PARLIAMENT ASSEMBLED:
We the undersigned residents of Canada, draw the attention of the House to the following:
THAT, the family farm operates to the benefit of all Canadians;
THAT, the uncertainty brought on by the single case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) found in Canada is a threat to not only every cattle producer but is a threat to the family farm and the entire agri-business industry that services Canada;
THAT, BSE affects all of rural Canada including farm supply stores, equipment and vehicle dealerships, churches, retailers, and everyone who relies on income from rural Canada and its farmers;
THAT, the Canada Ontario BSE recovery program is inadequate in that a large number of farms and businesses who are facing substaintial economic loss do not qualify for any assisstance;
THAT, the crisis in the cattle industry is due to factors totally beyond the control of farmers and the farm industry that services the farmers;
THEREFORE your petitioners request that Parliament recognize the crisis that exists in the entire agri-food industry in Canada and that the Canada Ontario BSE Recovery Program be extended and funded to treat fairly and equitably all those suffering as a result of the single case of BSE.
