A MESSAGE OF CONCERN FROM LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS TO CDC AND OUR CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION: We, the undersigned, write to express our profound dismay at the loss of the services and expertise of the Cambodian Community Health (CCH) 2010 Program in Lowell, MA, due to elimination of funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Elimination of funding means that Cambodians and their medical providers, especially medical specialists, will be limited in their ability to communicate regarding treatment and prevention; that the exemplary work of all the staff of the CCH 2010 Program will be eliminated, that Cambodian elders will return to isolation in their homes, and that health disparities will worsen. This loss of funding will weaken any additional services planned to enhance health care availability and services desperately needed by this community. Elimination of these services in the Cambodian community will overburden the health care system and will create an additional burden on family members, the current medical system, local hospitals and other supportive agencies.
We urge you, our public leaders, to provide funding to reinstate these services that are so critical to the well-being of the Cambodian community in Lowell, MA, and thus to the health of the entire Lowell community.
