Change the law of 1890
There was a law written in September 1890 in which it states that the designs on our coins cannot be changed more often than every 25 years unless mandated by Congress.
We have been stuck with the same design on our 1 cent coin for almost 100 years - our 5 cent coin for almost 65 years ( and if the folks in Virginia have their way - it will be forever ) - our 10 cent coin for 56 years and our half dollar for 38 years. Luckily the US Mint has changed our quarter & dollar coins. But it is beyond time to change the others.
More than that - it is time to change the law. Not a major change - but a minor one. A proposal to amend the law to make a change in the designs of our coins MANDATORY every 25 years is in order.
Throughout our nations history our coinage designs have changed - repeatedly. This has kept an interest in our coins worldwide and prevented stagnation in that interest.
Our coins are a way for the United States to make a statement - to present a piece of our history, our culture, our very of life, not only to our own citizens - but to the citizens of the world.
The United States Mint has proposed a change in our coinage designs to take place over the next several years. But we need to do more. We need to make sure that we do not fall into the same rut again and allow our coins to be stuck with the same designs for the next 100 years.
It is time for a change in our change !
