I urgently appeal to you to grant clemency to Michael Pennington, # 218361, who is scheduled to be executed on 19th of July 2005.
Michael Pennington is convicted for the Oct. 21, 1991, murder of 20-year-old Bradley Thomas Grooms in Lawton. He was under the influence of steroids when he committed the crime. His lawyer has failed to present this as an evidence. Therefore it is possible that he suffered from a unsoundness of mind when he murdered his victim.
Michael Pennington didnt have a police report before he committed the crime he was convicted for. He is a model inmate. He hasnt been in any trouble since hes got arrested. In fact he changed his life completely and became a better person. Michael Pennington should be given the opportunity to show that he has changed and that he deeply regrets the sorrow he has brought upon the family of his victim.
I wish to express my sympathy for the victims of violent crime and their families. However, I am opposed to the death penalty in all cases. It has been shown not to deter crime and brutalizes society by legitimizing violence. The death penalty is unevenly implied and it is irrevocable. Moreover, capital punishment is inconsistent with a professed concern for human rights, the right to life, the right not to be subjected to cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment and the dignity of human life.
Therefore, I appeal to you to grant clemency to Michael Pennington and commute his sentence of death.
