Continued artistic direction for Diablo 3

This petition is being made as a way to express the approval of us, the Diablo fans, about the way Diablo III artistic direction is being done.

There's a long discussion about this matter happening in http://forums.d2jsp.org/index.php?showforum=68 , there's thousands of comments in there so if you have any comment or suggestion feel free to do it there.

The main objective of this petition is to show Blizzard that there's a significant number of players that do agree with the current art style of the game, with this petition we hope to make Blizzard hear our voices, our opinions and our suggestions and we seriously don't want changes in the artistic direction of the game so it could appease people who can simply turn down their brightness/contrast.

It is some people's opinion that the graphic elements that characterize the Diablo universe are not fully present in this sequel, Diablo universe is made of:

- Gothic and obscure scenarios, cryptic, dark and shadowy dungeons

- Graphically realistic world with realistic, dirty and muddy textures

- Realistic armory and weaponry without over-sized and exaggerated proportions like big shoulder guards

- A macabre, dark and realistic art style

- Light radius, as all of you can remember, Diablo dungeons were characterized by the combination of a light radius system with shadows, everything that resides outside of the character vision sight is shadowed.

** However, we do realize that this game is to take place in the world of Sanctuary, which has not been hell ridden yet, and still flourishes - it has not been incinerated to a baron wasteland yet, and we completely agree with the artistic design currently in place.

What we got in Diablo III:

- A brighter art direction, with little influence by the Warcraft universe, Diablo isn't Warcraft, and you have clearly demonstrated that.

- Hand made, pastel looking textures with bold lines, defined contours, smooth colors and clean shapes.

- Dungeons with a blue/green environment lighting, technique used in cartoons to depict a dark, creepy and scary feeling but once again, which you do. This is Diablo 3, if we wanted to have an exact replica of Diablo 2, we would stick with that game instead of moving on.

- Character models defined by more noticeable characteristics like actual-sized and relative parts, vivid colors and realistic elements, with little taken away from World of Warcraft and pasted to Diablo.

- Outside scenarios with vivid colors, beautiful forests with colorful vegetation, shinny and beautiful waterfalls where even rainbows take place (because you stay true to physics, and go so far as to even take refracted light into account!).

- New and improved, and more realistic weaponry and armory, fitted and stylish armors, deadlier weapons, items that look do not look pasted directly from World of Warcraft.

What we don't want, since most of it is already incorporated:

- A darker, gothic, cryptic and creepier environment - the game is dark enough already.

- A more realistic artistic direction, more independent from the Warcraft universe art direction - it looks little like WoW, and Diablo 3 is more realistic than any other Diablo game.

- Darker dungeons without a blue/green environment, Diablo dungeons are dark and shadowy - the blue/green adds more style to the game

- The return of the light radius / shadow system from Diablo 1 and 2, a concept modified picture made by me roughly shows and suggests how the shadow system should work on Diablo 3: http://i31.tinypic.com/2zta5o7.jpg - because if it is too dark, we will not be able to see anything at all

- Slightly less colorful and less vivid outside scenarios, they are too heavily influenced by the World of Warcraft ones - the world of Sanctuary isn't hell yet.

- Darker and less colorful landscapes, Tristam never was colorful and beautiful: here's how it looked in Diablo 1 (before the evil was released across the lands): http://img126.imageshack.us/img126/5194/tristram2jh.jpg - because tristram was overrun by hellish minions in Diablo 1 and 2, not in Diablo 3 (That we know of yet)

- And most importantly: An independent and renewed artistic direction, not a recycled art direction taken from the Warcraft world, Diablo never was meant to be as cartoon'ish as Warcraft, they shall have independent and distinct styles, this isnt happening in Diablo 3, at first sight it looks like a remake of World of Warcraft, graphically and artistically speaking. - because its not.

Common arguments:

Q: The game is too cartoonish and will be present the whole game.

A: Since artistic design is one of the earliest phases of making a game, Diablo 3 would have to be torn down to square 1 when you can easily turn down your contrast. Also, it is not cartoonish.

Q: There are ways of making the game less cartoonish without stressing your graphics card.

A: At the cost of losing more of the 3-d world and 8 years of technological advance since Diablo 2 first came out

Q: The game takes place 20 years in the future, but the dungeons that have been left alone look clean and bright

A: Its a beta version. More dirt and clutter can be added in later development.

Diablo 1 Tristam also looked evil and scary before the evil was unleashed, check this picture of Diablo 1 Tristam and compare it to Diablo 3 Tristam: http://img126.imageshack.us/img126/5194/tristram2jh.jpg find the differences. If you compare, it is apparent that new tristram in inhabited by people without the influence of a growing evil beneath it, so naturally, it shouldn't look as evil.

And lastly here's a few concept pictures of how fans don't want Diablo 3 to be, they are inaccurate and exaggerated but remember, they're concept pictures, suggestions of how the game could look, but how we don't want it to.

What we ask Blizzard is to find a way of pleasing the fans of the Diablo universe by giving us a true sequel to Diablo 2 that is graphically coherent with the today's technology, since we do not want a regurgitation of Diablo 2.
