According to the Internet newspaper Tehelka, Professor Baral was in Delhi at a meeting organized by Observer Foundation, headed by Maharaj Kumar Rashgotra, former Indian ambassador to Nepal and former foreign secretary, government of India. The meeting was attended by Professor SD Muni of Jawaharlal Nehru University, among others. During his stay in India, Baral also spoke on a radio program on the situation in Nepal (Telhka, February 12).
The seventy-year old Prof. Baral is a well-known Nepali scholar of political science with many books and scholarly articles to his credit. His arrest for unknown reasons has provided cause for concern among the country's academics, intellectuals and civil society members. This is a gross violation of his academic freedom, and all the freedom-loving citizens of the world must condemn this act.
No society can progress when scholarly thoughts and expression are controlled. Such actions also hamper the search for a common solution to the difficulties facing the country caused by the eight-year old conflict. We the undersigned seek the immediate release of Prof. Baral.
