Demand an Environmental Assessment on the Port Lands Energy Centre

Whereas the Portlands Energy Centre (PEC) is a massive 550-megawatt natural gas-fired electrical generating plant that the Government of Ontario plans to build on Torontos waterfront at a projected cost of $700 million.

Whereas the impact on the environmental has not been fully assessed

Whereas gas plants emit nitrogen oxide and sulphur dioxide into the air, producing smog and acid rain and that water used to power the plants steam turbines will be chlorinated and be released back into the lake

Whereas the plant is being built without a full environment assessment being conducted, against the advice of experts including Torontos own Chief Medical Officer of Health.

Whereas those opposed to the plant include Toronto Mayor David Miller, Councillors Paula Fletcher and Sandra Bussin, MP Jack Layton, MPP Peter Tabuns, the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation, Torontos Chief Medical Officer of Health and local residents who have formed the Toronto Energy Coalition to stop the plant,

Whereas the Province of Ontario is moving forward with the PEC project despite the environmental concerns from the community and is planning to construct a natural gas pipeline from the site of the Hearn Generating stattion to 405 Eastern Avenue

Whereas Enbridge Gas has hired a consultant to conduct an Environmental Report of this 'Portlands Reinforcement Project', as the pipeline is called

Whereas an Environmental Report (ER)is different from an Environmental Assessment (EA) in that an EA is conducted independently and fully assesses environmental impact

We the undersigned call on the government to immediately conduct an Environmental Assessment on the Natural Gas Reinforcement Project, a proposed pipeline running from Hearn Generating stattion to 405 Eastern Avenue

We also call on the Government to heed the concerns of the Community and to find Environmentally safe and responsible measures to resolve the energy issues of the City and Province
