disapproval of Terrence Howard's Oscar Nomination For Hustle and Flow

This petition is to express our extreme disapproval of Terrence Howard's Oscar Nomination for his performance as a "pimp" in Hustle and Flow. While we are proud of the acting abilities of Terrence Howard, we are tired of the selection of derogatory roles of African Americans for Oscar nominations. In the recent past, African American actors have received nominations for being promiscuous, hypersexual females and for being a drug dealer. It is unacceptable to perpetuate these types of roles as the "standard" to which people of color should aspire to participate in. This nomination is not only demeaning to people of color; it is a tasteless nomination on behalf of American culture. As a result of this year's nomination, we will NOT participate in the viewing of the Oscars.
