I do not believe that the following novels should be banned from District 214 reading lists.

The Things They Carried, Tim OBrian

Slaughterhouse-Five, by Kurt Vonnegut

The Awakening, by Kate Chopin

Beloved, by Tony Morrison

The Perks of Being a Wallflower, by Stephen Chbosky

Freakonomics, by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner

The Botany of Desire: A Plant's-Eye View of the World, by Michael Pollan

These books are extremely helpful in teaching the other side of the story. The have many different viewpoints than most regular, more widely accepted books. These books are needed in our schools to prepare high school students for real life, where there is homosexuality, drugs, violence and radical beliefs. Students should be able to be exposed to these topics so they are more prepared for life after high school.
