The purpose for this petition is to change a part of Policy JH of the Douglas County student code of conduct and discipline. These changes are in regard for the student body to have the right for an Open Campus school. This would change a small part of Policy JH that states Students may not enter cars or leave the school grounds during school hours without advance permission from the principal.
A revised version of Policy JH would state in it's place the following: Students who are in 11th and 12 grades may leave the school campus only on their designated lunch period or a free period in which they were assigned. If a student is in 9th or 10th grade they must have signed permission from their legal guardian that gives them permission to leave with a student who is in 11th or 12th grade. Each student will be given at least one free period in which the student may leave the building or stay at certain predesignated parts of the building. The district and school are not responsible for the safety and actions of students who have left building. All students would have at least one free periods in which the student does not have a class to report to and does not have to be on campus. These free periods are meant for studying, and working on assignments.
