We, the undersigned, are strongly against your decision in selecting Dr. W. David Hager as head of the FDA Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee. Since such a position does not require Congressional approval, we ask of you to reconsider your selection.
A candidate for this position must deal with matters regarding drugs used in the practice of obstetrics, gynecology and related specialties, including hormone therapy, contraception, treatment for infertility, and medical alternatives to surgical procedures for sterilization and pregnancy termination. Dr. Hager will not properly execute such issues in a modern-day manner. His track record proves this. In the past he has:
refused to prescribe contraceptives to unmarried women;
stated that women suffering from premenstrual syndrome should seek help from reading the bible and through prayer;
endorsed the medically inaccurate assertion that the common birth control pill is an abortifacient;
partaken in a petition targeted to the FDA about revoking approval for mifepristone as a safe and early form of medical abortion;
and used religious beliefs against scientific evidence in medical decisions on numerous occasions.
We fear that Dr. Hager may continue this path of inappropriate decision making and harm many American citizens along its way; primarily women. The undersigned urge you to make the right decision and appoint a more appropriate candidate, who is chosen because of science and medicine, NOT religion and politics.
Mixing religion and medicine is unacceptable. Using the FDA to promote a political agenda is inappropriate and seriously threatens all women's health.
