Dress Code A Violation of Our Rights

Clothing, as a sign, conveys information about values, beliefs, and emotions. If the clothing that adolescents wear can be considered a sign, then that which they freely choose as individuals can be conveying an expression of their personal identity- Nathan Joseph (1986) If the clothing we choose are not degrading to the individual, do not display vulgarity, violence, or other socially and lawfully unacceptable behavior, our liberties should not be denied.
Discrimination is defined by Websters dictionary as the process by which two stimuli differing in some aspect are responded to differently.
From personal experience, I know several female students have been forced to wash off make-up or meet the consequences outlined in the student handbook under Distracting Apparel. Studies show that bright colors stimulate the mind. However, it is the bright colors, and their application that are being considered distracting in a school environment. Freedom of expression should be extended to everyone equally, or no one at all.
Body piercing and tattoos are among the newest art forms. Artistic expression is what makes each and every person an individual. Most students are in a public school system to escape the conformity that private schools require; we are here to be inimitable. Unless a tattoo is degrading to the individual, displays vulgarity, violence, or other socially and lawfully unacceptable behavior, our liberties should not be denied.
Our final years in school should be spent focused on learning as much as we possibly can. Teachers are spending so much time enforcing the dress code for gentlemen that it is becoming a distraction to learning. We propose that gentlemen must have their pants belted at their waist, but shirts do not have to be tucked in.
As a student body, we are still searching for our identities; at the same time we are blooming into successful adults, we need this vital time to finish developing and learning; we need not to hide our expressions behind band-aids and be afraid to stand out because it is shunned upon in our school.
