Education Maintenance Allowance

The education maintenance allowance scheme is apparently an incentive to encourage young people to go into further education, however the distribution of the education maintenance allowance is based on the same scheme that the inland revenue use for taxation, whereby pupils from families with an annual income of over 30,000 do not get any financial support for entering further education, and any pupils from families earning under 30,000 per year get between 10-30 per week for entering further education. On top of this, pupils who qualify for Education maintenance allowance also receive bonuses every term, for good attendance and effort, whereas the other pupils get nothing at all!

As far as incentives go this basically means that anyone coming from a family who earns over 30,000 per year, have no incentive what so ever to attend college in comparison to pupils who do receive education maintenance allowance. As far as education maintenance goes, many people who do not receive education maintenance allowance do struggle to afford to attend college. I have wrote to the LSC (Learning Skills Council) on various occasions (all correspondence can be found on the community website) requesting for the scheme to be reviewed, but to no avail, so I am taking the matter further, Downing Street to be exact! What I am proposing is an equal amount per person for attending college, if my calculations are correct, it is possible to give every pupil unto 7 per week with money to spare for bonuses, or up to 10 per week with no bonuses. If you wish to see changes in the scheme, sign the petition, this petition will be sent to the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, in an attempt to make Education Maintenance Allowance fair!
