This petition serves as notice to Hamilton City Council that an emergency Council meeting should be held to require that any redevelopment of 24 and 28 King Street East, Hamilton Ontario should include the facades of both original buildings into the design of any new structures.
As a community we are passionate about preserving the look and feel of the downtown core and we are resisting the notion that the developer will be able to make autonomous decisions about the fate of 24 and 28 King Street East without public consultation. They were built when Canada was just a child.
There needs to be more debate on the facades of both buildings about how to save them and how the developer can satisfy opponents of total demolition by using them brick by brick as a feature of the new vision.
Toronto has successfully incorporated old facades into new structures and we cannot see why Hamilton is so reluctant to do so.
