Enforce Mexican law: Save Cerro San Pedro

The case concerns the land, citizens, and governments of both our countries. It is that of the Canadian company, Metallica Resources Inc. and its gold and silver mine at Cerro de San Pedro, San Luis Potosн, operated through its Mexican subsidiary Minera San Xavier.
Since its beginnings in 1996, this project has moved forward despite the destruction of Mexicos historical patrimony, despite its impacts on the land, water and life of the greater valley of San Luis Potosн, despite an increasing number of violent acts and human rights abuses directed at the citizens of Cerro de San Pedro and San Luis Potosн, and despite numerous rulings of various instances of the Mexican judiciary that have withdrawn the companys mining permits.
We all share the responsibility of securing and developing patrimonial, environmental and human rights in both Mexico and Canada. It falls upon Canadian citizens to assure that companies registered in Canada comply with the highest possible standards in these areas. Our political representatives in Parliament must apply the force of law to see that these standards are upheld. As the highest instance of political authority in Mexico, it is the Mexican presidencys responsibility to see that those laws that protect Mexico unique historical heritage, its environment and the rights of its citizens are upheld and strengthened.
Today, we stand beside the citizens of Mexico in calling upon our governments to assume their legal and political responsibilities towards Cerro de San Pedro. We call upon President Felipe Calderуn and Prime Minister Stephen Harper to intervene immediately to uphold the law and stop the activities of Metallica Resources.
