Purpose: This petition, making the BC Ferry System a fair system, equal for all residents in the Province of British Columbia, Canada.
Currently, due to inaccessibility by existing hi-ways or bridges, travel by ferry is only means of transport for many residents in the province. These residents already pay general taxes, used for building and maintaining an existing roadway system, including bridges, throughout British Columbia, many in remote areas.
In addition, ferry users also pay vehicle licences and other associated levies to the Government. Owners of commercial vehicles, necessary for movement of goods and services to ferry-bound communities also pay their general taxes as well as vehicle licences and other associated charges.
For the Government to levy ferry fees for residents and commercial transport to these ferry-bound communities is in effect a penalty, as such, restricting ferry-bound communities in BC to thrive.
This adversely affects the economies of ferry-bound communities such as employment opportunities, social interaction, sports, schooling, etc., for specifically young people, people with lesser means and of course prices of goods and services consumed by these communities as well as locally produced products destined for export to other areas of the Province, Canada and the world.
This petition, The Legislation of The Province of British Columbia to in-act a Law to exempt specifically residents and owners of commercial vehicles serving ferry-bound communities from ferry fees throughout the Province of British Columbia.
