Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is a condition that occurs mostly in children. The brain consists of grey and white matter. ADEM affects mostly the white matter (WM), which consists of nerve fibres wrapped in a nerve sheath called myelin. Myelin acts as a layer of insulation surrounding the nerve and like plastic sheeting round an electrical wire, it helps to conduct signals between nerve cells in the brain. As myelin is destroyed in ADEM, it is also referred to as an ‘acute demyelinating condition’. Tia-Grace Ray was struck down with this virus in October 2011. This put her into a coma for 29 days left unable to move eat drink talk or breathe alone! She has been refused entry to Tadworth Childrens Trust for rehabilitation when a bed is available and doctors confirm its her best chance of a full or near full recovery by Sutton & Merton PCT due to "FUNDING" yet confirm its impossible for her to manage at home and think it’s acceptable to leave her lying in an hospital bed where intense rehabilitation is not available for another 3 months before they review her case. The petition is to get as much support to get the PCT to find the funding for this. This is the rest of the life of an 11 year old girl, which is being put in danger by the funding of the PCT (Primary care Trust). And get her in to Tadworth court! If the PCT cannot find this, the local council or the government must be able to.
