A Petition to Guarantee Representation
Of Women in the New Government of Iraq

As work progresses to draft a constitution and bill of rights for the new government in Iraq, it is imperative that the role of women is not eliminated or diminished. For over 40 years the women of Iraq have enjoyed a more active role in society, government, business, and law than was possible for women in other Middle Eastern nations. This was made possible by the laws in effect since 1959. There are powerful groups that would prefer to see such laws and rights revoked. They would rather that women be held in a role of second-class citizens.

The women of Iraq comprise approximately 65\% of the population. Many of the countrys most educated and capable citizens are women. It is unfair, immoral, illogical, and unconscionable to reduce the majority of the citizens of the country to a dependent and subservient role, dominated by the 35\% of the population who are male. In order to insure that these women are fairly represented in government, and in other safeguards such as a bill of rights, it is hereby demanded through this petition that positions at all levels of government be comprised of no less that 40 \% women.

The undersigned respectfully call for a permanent provision in the new constitution that women shall hold no less that 40\% of all elected and appointed positions throughout all levels of local, provincial, and national government.
