This past October, Jack Powers, Boston poet and artistic figurehead, passed away after a long bout of illness. As the founder of Stone Soup Poetry, a 39 year old weekly reading series, Powers was known for his unwavering belief in the written word and sharing it with everyone he could.

Powers served the city as publisher, event organizer, and activist. Not only did he bring poetry to the people of Boston from all walks of life, he also encouraged those same people to create and share their own work. A former employee of the state, his community activism in homeless aid and neighborhood clean up is also well-documented.

We are requesting that John Crowley and everyone else involved with this year's Mayor's Prose and Poetry Program in Boston give special notice to Powers as a way to mark his passing and give tribute for his tireless service to Boston and its artistic community.
