Dr. Alsingrace was arrested in Bahrain on August 13, 2010. The charges against Dr. Alsingrace include: 1. An attempt to overthrow the government of Bahrain, 2. Inciting acts of violence, 3. Spreading false information abroad to harm the image of Bahrain. He could be executed if these charges are upheld by the courts of Bahrain. Dr. Alsingrace has only been able to meet with his attorneys once since his August 2010 arrest. The meeting was allowed on Aug. 28, 2010, 14 days after his arrest, and took place between 3:00 and 7:00am.
Dr. Alsingrace had polio when he was 2 years old. His resulting disabilities include complete paralysis in one leg and partial paralysis in the other leg. For mobility purposes, he uses a wheelchair and crutches. According to alleged reports, since his arrest, Dr. Alsingrace has not been allowed access to either his wheelchair or crutches. In spite of his obvious disabilities, he has been forced to stand without support for long periods of time. On one occasion, Dr. Alsingrace was tortured by being required to stand on one leg for 2 days. He was also repeatedly kicked and roughly handled. Further, his nipples and ears were pulled by electric machines, he has been striped naked and beaten until he was close to losing consciousness. The psychological and emotional abuse he has endured includes listening to the cries of other prisoners while they were being tortured, not allowed to see his family and his medications have been withheld.
We find such treatment abhorrent and without place in a civilized country such as Bahrain purports to be. We therefore repeat our demand that humane treatment and justice be extended to Dr. Alsingrace and others in similar situations
