On June 16, 1997 Michael Manning, a disabled young man was attacked in a Monroe County, Pennsylvania gas station parking lot by two other, non disabled men. At least one of the attackers used a knife, and despite Michael's best efforts to defend himself, given his physical disability he sustained multiple injuries. One of the assailants was stabbed in the fracas and later died from his wounds. Despite the fact that Mr. Manning was the victim, and despite the fact that the fingerprints on the knife did not even belong to Mr. Manning he was charged with murder. Astonishingly he was later convicted for 3rd degree murder. To the horror and utter disbelief of all who knew Michael, and of his case he was sentenced to serve 12 - 30 years in state prison where "Prisoner number DW 1048" - a human being - now languishes; his physical condition deteriorating. By signing this petition we, the undersigned do here-by voice our outrage that Michael, the VICTIM of the assault has been convicted and sentenced to prison. Furthermore, we petition Governor Tom Ridge, The Pennsylvania State Judiciary and any other relevant legal entities to intercede in a way prescribed by law to offer relief to Mr. Manning, a crime victim, by overturning the verdict and sentence, or granting a pardon, clemency or suspended sentence and we further ask that relevant legal entities investigate the entire process which led to the original charges; the selection of an "all white" jury (Mr. Manning is an African American); the trial process itself and any other aspect of the overall case which may come into question.
