Justice For Tian Chua

We, the undersigned, are strongly disgusted with the grounds of conviction and the sentences handed down on Tian Chua, who was alleged to have bitten a police officer while resisting arrest in an alleged illegal assembly.

The charge, the conviction and the sentences were an attempt to disqualify Tian Chua as a Member of Parliament for Batu. This is evidenced by the sentence imposed on him. A fine of RM3,000 plus 6 months imprisonment is clearly excessive, having regard to the extent of injury which was minor, and
his non-criminal record. We couldnt help but to view that it is for the exact purpose stated above.

The entire episode is an orchestrated persecution against Tian Chua. This conviction and sentences, if sustained, would not only destroy the political career of Tian Chua on a personal level, but also may be used as a form of suppression on our right to freedom of assembly. Anyone convicted with illegal assembly will be handed down with severe penalty, thus, having a deterrence effects.

We are in solidarity to show our support for Tian Chua, to reject persecution by way of political tainted charges and unfair trial, and we demand "Justice for Tian".
