"You see sacrificing myself for Palestine is a noble cause. It is the straight way to pleasing my God and I would do it if I had the opportunity.. (In an interview on BBC Hardtalk 2/11/2004)
The permission granted to Azzam Tamimi to speak on our campus crosses a boundary from freedom of speech into the consent of extremism. By allowing such extremism we are fostering divisions on our campus, encouraging the incitement of racial hatred and making a considerable proportion of the student body feel uncomfortable.
The University of Birmingham Code of Practice states that:
Universities do not function in a vacuum and wider conflicts and disputes, often involving ethnicity or religious faith, may sometimes find expression on campus amongst the student body or other constituencies. The challenge for universities is to identify when the pursuit of freedom of ideas and expression crosses a threshold and becomes extremism or intolerance.
(University of Birmingham Code of Practice On Freedom of Speech on Campus, 2009-2010, 1.6)
I believe that the permission granted for Azzam Tamimi to speak crosses this threshold, and by signing below, I disagree with the decision to host him on my campus. I further ask the University to withdraw the permission granted to Azzam Tamimi
