Kenyans: Say NO to high fuel prices

The purport of the new regulations was ostensibly to set limits on wholesale and retail prices of natural gas, crude oil, coal and other fuels. Controls were also to be imposed on importers of petroleum products, storage facilities, transporters, refineries and sellers.A formula was arrived at to arrive at an all inclusive pump price.
The Minister was categorical at the time that all oil marketers would have to review their petrol pump prices downwards as per the new regulations or face dire consequences which would include cancellation of licenses and other penalties as appropriate.
The beneficiary in the entire process was to be the Kenyan Consumer.
At the time it looked to be a noble idea.
Now we wonder whether it was a noble idea after all.
The cost of petrol in Kenya has now gone up by roughly 9.5 percent in the past month. In increasing pump prices at its routine monthly review in the month of April 2011 the Energy Regulatory Commission attributed the price jump mainly to rising international oil prices prompted by political instability in North Africa and Middle East. The end result of the increase in pump prices is an increase in inflation which now stands at 9 percent.
As a Kenyan Consumer the question that I want to pose to my Government is this- what are you doing to address the issue of the runaway pump prices?
The cost of living and of basic commodities will definitely go up. Remember majority of Kenyans live below a dollar a day and majority of this Kenyans use Kerosene which has now shot up to unmanageable levels. We need a solution and this business of passing the buck must and should stop.
Lets put our Government to task and let them give us a solution to this endemic problem.
To begin with the Government could consider reducing the tax on fuel commodities so as to show that they really care about the common mwananchi. This would in turn force the oil marketers to reconsider their profit margins and slash prices so as to drive a reduction of the pump prices. The formula arrived at to regulate pump prices needs to be reviewed.
Very soon we may not be able to reach our places of work because we will not be able to fuel our cars or pay the matatu fare to and from work. We need to find a solution and we need to find it now.
Lets say NO to the high fuel prices.
