We, the undersigned, welcome the recent award of a CBE to Mr William John Charles (known as John Charles). However, as Wales' greatest ever footballer and, in our opinion, one of the most talented footballers that the UK has ever produced, we feel that Mr Charles deserves a knighthood.
This is not only for his achievements as a footballer (leading Wales to the World Cup Quarter Finals in 1958, top scorer in the English top league and the season after top scorer in Italy's Serie A, Italian Footballer of the Year - one of only 3 non-Italians to win the award - and many other successes) but also the manner in which he conducted himself.
Known in Italy as "il Buono Gigante" or the Gentle Giant, John became a hero in Turin where he played for several seasons as both centre forward and centre half. When Juve scored he was moved from the forward line into defence, he was so versatile and so good. He was voted Juventus' greatest ever foreign player, he is still revered there.
John Charles was a supremely talented footballer who graced the field for Wales, Cardiff City, Leeds United, Juventus, AS Roma and Swansea. He gave enjoyment to millions through his talent and through his desire to play the game in the proper manner. He has done countless amounts of work for charity and gives pleasure to this day to people who attend football matches in Wales and in Leeds.
We believe that John Charles should be knighted and call upon Her Majesty and Her Government to confer one upon him.
