To whom it may concern: I am writing in regards to a woman in Nebraska named Kathy Porterfield. Kathy had a MS relapse and was sent to the hospital. The state decided for her that she would not return home, instead they sent her to a nursing home against her will. Because of her disabilities Kathy is not fully independant, cant't work and requires personal care assistants to help her with many of her daily activities. However, prior to her relapse Kathy was living in her own home, having help come to her. By putting Kathy in the nursing home, the state as has taken away what little privacy, dignity, and independance she has. She has no internet, or any way of communicating with friends, unless they call her. This is no life. Kathy prefers to be in her own home, and have the care attendants take care of her when she needs them there. It is very important to her that she can live the way she wants to, and it is important to me as a friend to see she is treated with the dignity of a human being. Just becasue she has a physical handicap does not mean she can not make her own decisions and does not mean she doesnt know what is best for her.
