This system has to change to work fairly for both parents. When a parent doesn't make the payments it is not always by choice. The collection program can take everything from the parent who is required to pay with the push of a button.
Currently:
-only allowed ONE call per work day includes leaving a message for your case worker. If they call back and you miss the call you have used up your call for the day.
-if you lose your job, are ill or injured and can not make your payments you have to file for a court order before anything can be done on their end. This can take months. In the mean time, they have the right to garnish any of your wages from your employer- if you are still at work, seize your bank account, suspend your drivers license, freeze your passport with a fee and garnish your income tax refund or jail time
-they can send notice saying you are many months behind in payments when you didn't even receive notice that you had an account, they can find you but can't provide notice?
-they charge a fee for suspending a drivers license even if you don't own one
-if you overpay a cheque is sent back to you and not kept for future payments
-they accept credit cards now-if you can't work you can't get a credit, if you are refunded by the court you are not paid back interest
-many people have attempted or committed suicide from the stress of this program when it doesn't do what it should
The Future:
There should be a simple "on hold button" for those required to pay. When you lose your income or other changes have happened there should be a direct line to call without limits and put payment on hold to arrange a court date to have amounts adjusted without fines or garnishment until a new court order has been made.
By signing this petition I want to help make a positive change for those folks required to make support payments for their children. I believe having a payment hold option for the payor will help payors keep payments current in the long run and should be in place in the Maintenance Enforcement Program.
