The Mind Garage was at the forefront of a unique, important period of historical change, setting a course which redefined Rock and Roll and revolutionized Christian worship with a new kind of music that continues to inspire untold millions worldwide.
The pilgrimage was documented by local and national media including Rolling Stone Magazine, Billboard, The Village Voice, NBC and ABC television. They were the first ROCK band to write, and perform an original, live, Rock and Roll worship service in church after church from 1967 to 1970. The band was discovered in New York City's Greenwich Village in 1968 performing the Electric Liturgy. The music was dubbed "Theo-Rock" by the Village Voice, and later called Christian Rock.
The Mind Garage accomplished the first nationally televised Rock and Roll worship service from New York on ABC TV in April, 1969. After three years of persistent efforts, they had cultivated a new environment where rock music could thrive, and in the process established Christian Rock, a completely new genre of music.
Rock and Roll was condemned as the devil's music until the Mind Garage took it into church. The Mind Garage recorded the FIRST Christian Rock album at RCA's Nashville Sound, Studio A on Music Row, in 1969 foreshadowing the Nashville based Contemporary Christian Music industry. The album is the Electric Liturgy, RCA Victor LSP-4319. Now, Christian music, especially Rock and Roll in all its varieties, is the fastest-growing segment of the mainstream music industry, a testimony to the impact of the Mind Garage.
The Mind Garage is a ROCK band that added to the EVOLUTION, DEVELOPMENT, PERPETUATION and DEFINITION of rock and roll, not only in ways that can be seen and heard, but also in ways yet to be understood. It is time to recognize their contributions, and induct them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
