Nancy Mitchnick, Rudolf Arnheim Lecturer in Studio Arts.
We are urging:
1. A renewal of her contract or such modification that will allow her
to continue her tuition and advising.
2. A public explanation by VES Administration or Harvard College as to
why they are depriving the institution and its students of someone
with such particular abilities, talent and dedication.
3. A public explanation by VES Administration or Harvard College as to
why they are letting of their one established, practicing painting
professor who can teach beginning painting in a skill-based manner.
Since 1994, Nancy Mitchnick has provided an invaluable service to
students in and out of the studio. Mitchnick is well known as a great
American teacher in painting - - complimenting a hands on course
framework with a rigorous intellectual discourse. Students and
colleagues are concerned that her departure will leave an irredeemable
gap in the VES department. Mitchnick was also awarded the Phi Beta
Kappa Teaching Prize in 2001. Her classes attract the most applicants
in the department and her reputation extends across other fields of
study on campus. The third floor classroom has always been a
powerhouse of talent and will certainly remain this way if Mitchnicks
presence continues.
