Moderate Republicans: Join Jim Jeffords in Leaving the Republican Party

When Senator Jim Jeffords announced his decision to leave the Republican Party, he underscored how extremists have taken over the Republican Party under George W. Bush.
"Given the changing nature of the national party, it has become a struggle for our leaders to deal with me and for me to deal with them. Indeed, the party's electoral success has underscored the dilemma that I face within the party. In the past, without the presidency, the various wings of the Republican Party in Congress have had some freedom to argue and influence and ultimately to shape the party's agenda. The election of President Bush changed that dramatically.
"Looking ahead, I can see more and more instances where I'll disagree with the president on very fundamental issues the issues of choice, the direction of the judiciary, tax and spending decisions, missile defense, energy and the environment, and a host of other issues, large and small."
As a Senator, you have taken moderate positions on these issues, just like Senator Jeffords.
If you truly believe in these fundamental principles, then we call on you to join Senator Jeffords in leaving the Republican Party.
This should not be a terribly difficult choice, because in reality, the Republican Party has left you and embraced the radical right.
If you join the Democratic Party, we will welcome you with open arms. You will be able to vote your conscience and live up to your principles.
And as an added benefit, you will be in the majority - where your voice will be heard. As a result, you will be able to do more for your constituents.
We urge you to stand up for your principles and join Senator Jeffords in leaving the Republican Party. This is a crucial time in our history, and your actions would make an enormous difference.
