National Heroes Day

I/We the undersigned:

Request for a new holiday day of Observance known as National Heroes Day to be celebrated every year on October 24.

National Heroes Day, proposed by the USA Bumble Bee kids, would be a day to celebrate, appreciate and thank those who are the true heroes of our community- Police officers, firefighters and military personal. October 24th can be a day where kids and adults of all ages can have an opportunity to thank them and show them how much their risking their lives for us is appreciated. This could be done on October 24th in the following ways for example:

1. Children/adults across the nation on October 24th can visit local fire stations, police stations, USO or local military places and offer them a thank you card, baked goodies etc.
2. Children/adults across the nation can wear a silicon bracelet that says Heroes Day in honor of police officers, firefighters and military personal.
3. Children/adults can also show their support on Heroes Day by wearing colors such as red (symbolize Firefighters), White (Symbolize US Soldiers) and Blue (Symbolize Police Officers).
4. National Heroes Day can also be a day to acknowledge local heroes both young and old that help make a difference everyday in peoples lives as well. As someone once said To the world you might just be one person, but to one person you just might be the world.

The importance of National Heroes Day:
Police Officers, firefighters and military personal have chosen dangerous jobs. They risk their lives everyday from putting out a fire to search and rescue to preventing crime to defending our country. Everyday, their jobs put their lives at risk but somehow they dont let that deter them from protecting the American Citizens. They face the dangers head on not thinking of their own lives but of saving the lives of others. They sacrifice their families too for us.
As one Captain from the police Department shared, he had been a police officer for 15 years and not once during those 15 years did he spend Thanksgiving or Christmas with his family. While we spent the holidays with loved ones laughing and eating there are men and women out there who are protecting us so we can have a memorable holiday. Even they sacrifice their lives and time with their families with us, they have no regrets because they understand that true Heroes dont take the day off.

Underneath a Heros cape, youll find Police Officers, Firefighters and Military personal who are real people just like you and me. National Heroes Day will help boost morale and motivation, spirit and the acknowledgement that their own lives and their families time are not all for sacrificed in vain.

Why National Heroes Day on October 24, 2006:
October 24th has been chosen for National Heroes Day to commemorate the falls between October 22nd which is when a police officer died during a simple traffic stop and October 26th where 5 firemen lost their lives as they fought the Esperanza Fire in California. Also, between October 22nd and October 26th of 2006, 16 military personal died in protecting our country. All these men died in trying to protect us, save us from danger and gave their lives to create a safer community for us. Isnt this the true definition of a hero?
All in all, National Heroes Day is an opportunity to thank Police Officers, Firefighters and Military Personal as well as people that have impacted our own lives with a little appreciation that in our opinion gets overlooked every day. As a Deputy Chief said of the Police Force said a small thank you goes a very long way.
