No Guilt By Association

In the state of Texas, an individual can be arrested and charged with a crime he or she did not commit if they are associated with the person who committed it. For example, if 2 people are shopping in a store together and one person shoplifts, both of them can be arrested and punished for shoplifting even if the innocent individual was totally oblivious to what was going on.

This is not right. People should be held accountable for their actions and their actions alone. Guilt by association is a logical fallacy that has no place in American courts. People should not be punished unless they knowingly and willingly commit a crime. It is wrong to arrest innocent people.

We, the people of Texas, are calling upon our legislators to change these laws to where only people who commit crimes can be charged with crimes. Guilt by association should be done away with. If a person does not actually commit a crime, there should be no arrest and no punishment administered.

31. Thuylieu L | There are things in this world we can't help and one is having friends. We can't help what another person might do. Just because you happen to know them doesn't make you a criminal too.
