NO MORE SILENCE AGAINST ABUSED WOMEN!

Under the prevalence of various forms of violence against women, high rate of unreported women abuse cases concerns the team members. More than 66\% of Canadian women experience physical and/or sexual abuse at some point in their lives, according to a 1993 panel on Violence against Women. The invisibility of spousal abuse perpetuates this problem, which can be supported by the data: 29\% of women had experienced a spousal assault. Consequently, in Canada from 1975 to 2004, 72.6 females per year became victims of spousal homicides. However, 61\% of all Canadians say they personally know at least one woman who has been sexually or physically assaulted but they never report to police (GSS, 2004). As well, percentage of female victims of current spousal violence who reported to police in the previous year is only 41\% (Statistic Canada, 2006).

When the workers search for the relevant social policy regarding women abuse prevention, the result is discouraging. There is no specific law aimed towards woman abuse being mandatory to report; legislations pertaining to women abuse fall under the bigger criteria of family violence where a mandatory reporting legislation practiced only when it involves child abuse (Department of Justice, 2011). Compared with America where legislations on spousal violence mandatory reporting have been in existence in most of states, the policy in Canada falls behind.

Currently, controversy exists primarily about the risks and benefits of such laws. A report released in U.S in 2000 gathered the data, while 45\% women reported they would have been at greater risk for abuse following a mandatory report, most women (81\%) thought there should be a law making the nurse or doctor report the abuse (Malecha, Lemmey, McFarlane, Willson, Fredland, Gist, Schultz, 2000). The Ministry of Justice, Canada also acknowledges that the mandatory reporting on spousal violence is being explored (Department of Justice, 2011).

Therefore, the team will aim to call for action to strongly support legislation in mandatory report of women abuse echoing the social movement of the Amnesty International. The Amnesty International is a global movement of over 3 million people committed to those who are denied justice and freedom. In 2004, it launched its global Stop Violence Against Women Campaign to help break the silence around this pandemic, aiming to stop the violence and support the work of womens human rights advocates around the world.
