OCEAN PARK BOULEVARD IMPROVEMENT PETITION


We the undersigned residents of the Ocean Park neighborhood and the City of Santa Monica want Ocean Park Boulevard, west of Lincoln Boulevard, redesigned to address the following safety and livability issues:

1.) Increase pedestrian and vehicular safety, as there are approximately 30
accidents reported per year, of which many are hit and run

2.) Reduce noise by moving the traffic away from the homes that are set-back only five feet, on average, from the sidewalk due to earlier, unnecessary, street widening

3.) Increase greening and improve landscaping by making available additional planting areas on this excessively wide street

4.) Create safer bike paths by separating them from the car/bus/truck traffic lanes and keeping traffic out of the bike lanes through greenscaping

5.) In general, improve the livability and safety associated with any form of movement along this section of Ocean Park Boulevard, which is a residential street. There are three schools on Ocean Park Boulevard and two others located on 4th Street adjacent to Ocean Park Boulevard. The only moderately safe place to cross is at the 6th Street signal.

For the past year, the Ocean Park Association has been requesting Santa Monica City Council and City Staff to take action on this safety and livability project. Residents of Ocean Park have been patiently waiting for this to happen. The original plan was studied, approved, and never funded more than 14 years ago.

We want to see the City fund a new, updated study of Ocean Park Boulevard west of Lincoln Boulevard. Once the study has been completed, we want the City to secure funding for the project through state grants and base budget funds. We want the transportation piece of the Land Use and Circulation Element to address the plan. We support OPA's efforts and previous community efforts over the past 14 years in developing this plan.
