Sri Lanka is no exception, and is one of the hardest hit as here in Sri Lanka, the rise of food prices during the past year was unprecedented. Millions of Children along with their mothers are suffering from malnutrition and anemia. The food crisis coupled with all other ills ailing the country has pushed all good hopes for a better future for Sri Lanka over the edge.
It is now crystal clear that neither Globalization nor Free Trade or Green Revolution could solve the rampant problems of food and nutrition now prevalent in Sri Lanka.
Therefore, the solution is clearer than ever before, for Sri Lanka just as much as for all other nations. Agriculture as it professed now needs a complete transformation. Quality food for all in sufficient quantity is only possible through 'ecological agriculture' that rebuilds the regenerative capacities of nature. The right of trade and the production of food have to change hands from monopolistic private traders and corporations to small farmers, fishers, pastoralists and other small scale food producers. In Sri Lanka, especially there's the dire need of securing the right to food of the marginalized sections of the population such as the poverty stricken estate sector population along with that of the rural and urban low income earners.
Campaign for Peoples Solutions to Food Crisis (CPSF) is a concerted effort of a communion of organizations united in this regard. A petition bearing our suggestions for solving the current food crisis has already hit the roads, covering 16 districts across Sri Lanka, seeking the support and recognition of the masses. People from all walks of life; the rural, urban and the estate sector populations in their thousands have already approved of the aforesaid alternative list of suggestions so far.
In such spirit we invite you one and all to be a part of the people's signature campaign commemorating the World Food Day of the 16th of October, 2008. The proceedings will be on from 07.00 am to 10.00 am, in front of the Railway Station, Fort, Colombo. Sri Lanka.
Thank you,
Movement for Land and Agricultural Reforms (MONLAR)
On behalf of CPSF
