We are writing to express our shock and outrage over the recent act of vandalism at the Jadavpur University, the destruction of the Office of Karmachari Samsad and the Science Club on the night of 5th April, 2007. Books and valuable records of the Karmachari Unions history were set ablaze, pictures of famous and revered persons were destroyed, the furniture wrecked and glasses smashed. Even the ceiling fans were not spared. We are requesting you to come and witness their twisted, mangled shapes as a reminder of the type of vicious mindset which was at work behind the attack. The attack was preplanned. The arsonists even prevented the Fire Brigade from entering the premises for a considerable period of time; while the blaze raged on. A spirit of lynching was in the air. It is even more dismissing to note that this act was carried out by some students of the University in association with external antisocial elements. As former students and well wishers of this University, we are appealing to you to ensure that the guilty is brought to book and peace is restored in the campus so that such an event does not occur ever again.
