Hello Torontonians, and Toronto enthusiasts!
Within the last handful of years, Toronto has seen a rise in gun and gang related violence (though a decrease in general / domestic violence). We are seeing more gun violence happening in crowded public places. This summer alone has brought gun violence to food courts of major malls, social events of urban communities, clubs, festivals, and all over our streets. As the violence escalates, and the public cries out to the police, we are met with responses such as; "Relative to other large urban centres this is a remarkable safe city" by our own police chief. When we need comforting and resolution, he mutters words of dismissal.
To top things off, this is the very same police chief that dismissed ANY wrong doing of officers during the G20 summit. Even after multiple public and private inquiries have revealed a whole slew of human rights being forfeited, and that innocent bystanders were dragged into the police brutality, our police chief still denied the wrong doings of his staff and still refuses to apologize. He refuses to take responsibility for the actions of his officers, dismisses and blame on his end, and vows to follow the legal code against any rogue officers. He was the police chief, and it was his staff that made mistakes. It is his job, responsibility, obligation to take responsibility for the actions of his staff. He is the head of the department, so he is responsible for the goings on.
We cannot sit back and let this menace to our city disregard the real dangers, while creating more problems for the innocent. Why are people being harassed and arrested for mere pot crimes, and hanging wandering the entertainment district after a club closes, when we have escalating gun violence and a corrupt police force.
Toronto needs POSITIVE change and a re-alignment of priorities to keep the people safe and happy. There is no "serve and protect" in this city, only "scare and provoke".
