Political Messages Via Clothing at DMS

In recent events, a few students at the Danville Middle School located in Danville, Pennsylvania have made their own t-shirt sporting political messages. Thinking that this would be allowed, they proceeded to wear the shirts during school. Unfortunately, the principal called the students to the office to order them to take the shirts off because apparently they were 'offending'. When one student asked the principal whether this was violating the 1st Amendment, the principal told them that it was violating school dress codes.
We believe that the 1st Amendment should overrule the school dress code. According to the case of Tinker v. Des Moines, this has already been an issue in other areas. So shouldn't the Danville Middle School allow these t-shirts?
